About This Spot

Stepping into Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria feels like discovering a cherished neighborhood gem where the heartbeat of traditional Mexican flavors hums warmly in every corner. Nestled along Flower Avenue in San Diego, this spot pulses with a lively yet comforting rhythm, a place where the pace slows just enough for conversation and savoring each bite. The air carries the inviting aroma of slow-cooked birria, mingling effortlessly with the friendly chatter and occasional laughter that paint a welcoming backdrop.

The space carries a casual, no-frills charm that makes it easy to relax whether you’ve come alone for a quick meal or with family and friends seeking something heartfelt. It’s a setting where the familiar becomes special — a little like joining neighbors at the table and sharing stories over plates that feel both honest and lovingly crafted. The staff moves with attentive warmth, quick to recommend a favorite and eager to make you feel like a returning friend rather than just a customer.

When the food arrives, it’s more than sustenance; it’s a celebration of tradition and care. Take the birria tacos or the tostadas that arrive layered with rich, tender meat steeped in deep, savory broth — a comforting embrace after a morning stroll or a midday pause. The subtle spice of “Cebollas Chupacabras” adds a joyful spark, while classic beverages like Mexican Coke and café de olla offer nostalgic notes that linger alongside friendly conversations.

Beyond a meal, Ed Fernandez is about moments — whether sharing a steaming bowl of menudo with loved ones or enjoying a quiet café regular as the day unfolds. There’s a gentle sense of belonging here, where hospitality isn’t an afterthought but part of the soul, inviting you to slow down and feel at home in a busy world. In a city bustling with options, this birrieria stands out not just for its food but for the genuine human moments that fill the space.

Nothing makes my day happier, than being together with my wife and daughter and by accident we discover a good place to eat. Today, after having a nice nature morning walk at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge in IB, we googled to find something close by for breakfast. A birria place named Ed Fernandez came up just east a few blocks away. We decided to give it try and to our surprise it turned out to one of the best beef birria places we have tried here in south bay / TJ. The concept is that you place your order on a window located in front of the building. A friendly young lady taking the orders we had informed it was our first time, recommended some of their popular items on their menu. After paying the bill they guided us to our table. The place was almost full, which assured us the food had to be good. Our order came very quick and OMG it was delicious!!!!! The portions were just right but the meat, broth and tortillas were 10 out 10. The service was also very attentive and friendly...we are defenetly going to come back and try other items on their menu! We highly recommend it if you like beef birria and good service!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The food here is seriously next level—full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and clearly made with care. You can tell they take pride in what they serve because every bite was on point. Customer service was just as impressive. The whole team was welcoming, friendly, and super efficient. Our food came out fast without sacrificing quality, which is always a big plus. Special shoutout to Araceli (I believe that was her name) — she was hands down the best. Very attentive, kind, and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. The atmosphere was great, the service was smooth, and the food speaks for itself. This is definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to again and again. Highly recommend to anyone looking for amazing food and top-tier service. The whole team did an excellent job

I already know I don’t have to say how bomb the food is! The crowds and my photos speak for themselves. This is about service here. Great hospitality is very hard to find these days and my people don’t disappoint here. You feel like you’re in Mexico eating at your loving mother’s house where she just wants to feed you and that brings them joy! It’s a fast, kind and warm service and atmosphere. I bring anyone that visits me here! And the flan is just a great finish!

The food is absolutely delicious and the service was so exceptionally outstanding that I wouldn’t mind coming back to visit multiple times in the week. The menudo is full of flavor, the tripe very well washed and not gamey, it could very likely be the best menudo in all of San Diego. The service was quick and very friendly, everyone was happy to help and give suggestions to improve our experience. Try the quesabirria tacos and don’t miss out on their menudo.

Service and food were amazing. We tried a few different items on the menu and none disappointed. The Birriaquiles and Menudo were delicious and the coffee as well. Service was amazing as mentioned. Anyone that came to help or just check on us was very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Will definitely return when in the area and recommend to family and friends.

Ed Fernandez is simply on another level. Hands down the best birria in San Diego, and honestly even better than our go-to spot in Rosarito. The flavors are rich, authentic, and unforgettable. You can tell right away that this is the real deal. We tried the crispy birria tacos and the flour quesabirria tacos, and both were absolutely phenomenal. The crispy tacos had that perfect crunch with tender, juicy meat inside, while the flour quesabirria was gooey, cheesy, and deeply flavorful. Every bite was packed with bold, savory goodness that keeps you wanting more. On top of the food, the service was quick and efficient, which is impressive given how popular this place is. The back patio seating was shaded and surprisingly comfortable, making it an ideal spot to relax and enjoy your meal even on a hot San Diego afternoon. If you’re a birria lover, this is a must-visit spot. The hype is 100% real, and after one visit, you’ll see why so many people call this the best birria around

I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria while visiting San Jose, and it was easily one of the highlights of my trip. The portions were huge, definitely come hungry! Every bite was packed with flavor, and you can really taste the quality in the ingredients and preparation. The service was impressively fast and friendly, making the whole experience seamless. The atmosphere had such a welcoming and authentic vibe—it felt both lively and comfortable, perfect for enjoying a meal with friends or family. As someone visiting from Canada, I can confidently say this place is worth the trip all on its own. I would absolutely come back again. Highly recommend to anyone looking for amazing food, generous portions, and great service in San Jose!

The birria tacos are very good. I liked the chupacabra, which had a crunchy tortilla shell, birria, grilled onions, and cheese. Cheat sheet: Panda = Pork Belly Tatemado = Charred Meat Mano = Handmade Corn Tortillas Harina = Flour Tortilla Paquete = Pre-packaged Stew Meat Mulita = Tortilla Sandwich Tostada = Open-faced Taco Orden = Order Consommé = Clear Broth Menudo = Tripe and Corn Soup Torta = Sandwich Ahogada = Carnitas in Spicy Red Sauce
